In recent news, Taiwan has encountered increase military spending pressure as their longtime rival China has invested further into military operations. Longtime tensions have developed between the two nations since World War II when Taiwan's current administration split off to form the Republic of China on the island of Taiwan.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has reached out to the US to purchase a plethora of advanced high-grade military aircrafts (F-16 Viper Fighter Jets) to expand national defense capabilities to compete with Chinese military pressure. I believe that the longtime tension between China and Taiwan is due to China's national sense of collectivism and losing the Republic of China to independence would cause tension between the two countries and in turn affect Chinese and American relations as the current administration has put pressure on national trading.
Taiwan has maintained the desire for independence and has been supported by the US and only time can tell what innovations Taiwan pursues to stay technologically relevant.
